Staying local - the sustainable study tour choice for UK educational institutions

Why choosing a UK-based study tour can reduce your carbon footprint over 90%

As climate change continues to dominate the headlines, organisations are increasingly finding ways to minimise their carbon footprints.

And at the forefront of science and technology, colleges and universities in particular are taking positive steps to become greener.

In line with their students’ core values, some institutions already collate and publish their annual environmental reports, with others likely to follow.

Environmental issues a top concern for students

Research by Unite, the UK’s largest provider of student accommodation, shows that students are more concerned about climate change than any other issue (June 2021). In a survey of 1,000 undergraduate students, carried out in collaboration with Opinium, the majority (60%) identified climate change and environmental issues as one of the top three most urgent priorities for world leaders to tackle today.

The research showed students also taking bold action in day-to-day life – 88% saying they now limit air travel annually for environmental reasons.

In April 2022, UCL launched their new Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education as a new survey revealed children are more worried about climate change than any other issue. SOS International 2020 global survey disclosed that students are concerned about climate change and want to see this reflected in their education.

Flights - the No.1 reason to take your study tour local

Flights are one of the most significant contributors to the emission of greenhouse gases are

flights, constituting about 2% of the world’s carbon emissions. According to the Air Transport Association, passenger numbers will double to 8.2 billion in 2037.

A return flight from London to New York City will burn 0.82 tonnes of CO2e. By comparison, a return train from Aberdeen to London will generate 0.08 tonnes.

Getting to London – the picturesque way

Not only will students reduce their environmental impact. Train journeys through the British countryside have been hailed as some of the most beautiful in the world. Castles, mountains, and miles of coastline; all surrounded by luscious green landscape, make for a relaxing trip into the UK’s most vibrant city.

Eco-friendly London venue

Based at the leading event centre ExCeL London in the Royal Docks, London Study Tours offer a comprehensive, industry-focused educational experience, making use of London’s fast and efficient transport system.

Since the introduction of the Elizabeth line, it’s now easier than ever to reach ExCeL. Opening in May 2022, it’s Britain’s newest railway.

The electric underground route transports passengers from the Docklands to central London in 12 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 90 miles per hour.

Holding the Carbon Saver Gold Standard Award, ExCeL is also part of the United Nations Global Compact scheme and publishes sustainability reports annually.

Energy-efficient ways to get around London

  • Buses: All of London’s 9,000 buses meet or exceed the cleanest European emissions standards. A new fleet of zero-emission electric buses was introduced to the city this year.

  • Walking: Reduce pollution and improve health by exploring the city by foot

  • Electric bikes: There are 12,000 Santander bikes for hire across London, costing just £2 for 24 hours. E-bike provider Lime reported 5 million rides since their launch in 2018, with 2.5m in 2021 alone

  • Cable cars: The Emirates Airline is London’s most energy-efficient form of transport, with emissions similar to that of a hairdryer. A scenic way to travel across the Thames!

Green London

The IESE Cities in Motions Index 2020 ranked London as the most environmentally friendly city in the world. The city aims to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

With over 3,000 parks accounting for 40% of the city, you’re never far from one of the capital’s green spaces, including nearby Queen Elizabeth Park.

A legacy of the 2012 London Olympics, the 560-acre park forms part of the London Study Tours experience and is a world-leading cultural destination for sport, entertainment and education.
